With days before the 2018 NBA draft, there has been lots of speculation about Trae Young and where he will land.
Young is a gifted point guard from Oklahoma that led the NCAA is points (27.4) and assists (8.7) last season. He’s projected to be a top pick according to many mock drafts. An article from Aran Smith has Young going 3rd overall to the Atlanta Hawks. This makes sense since Atlanta has made their current starting point guard Dennis Schroder available for trade.
The Phoenix Suns own the 1st pick in the draft followed by the Sacramento Kings. Phoenix could potentially draft a point guard, but they traded for Elfrid Payton during last season. Sacramento drafted De’Aaron Fox with the 5th pick in 2017, so it’s highly unlikely they would select Trae Young if he’s still on the board.
The next teams to select after Atlanta belong to the Memphis Grizzlies (4th) and the Dallas Mavericks (5th). Memphis already has point guard Mike Conley, who is being paid $30 million a year while Dallas has point guards in Dennis Smith Jr, Yogi Ferrell, and Seth Curry on their roster. It will be shocking if either of these two teams would select a point guard at their respected spots.
Trae Young going to Atlanta makes the most sense out of the top 5 draft picks. Of course we’ll know more when the NBA draft starts tomorrow at 4:00 PM PDT on ESPN.
